John Osbourne explores the state of post-war Britain through three generations of a family of entertainers.
To mark the play's 50th anniversary, Robert Lindsay plays struggling comedian Archie Rice, a music-hall performer in an age when music halls had all but disappeared. He's headlining a second-rate revue in a neglected seaside town. Driven by dreams of stardom and emulating his father's success, Rice keeps going, no matter what suffers. He cheats on his wife and deceives his father because the most important thing is that the show must go on.
